The wild plant known by botanists as common chicory (Cichorium intybus) is mainly native to Central Europe, but also occurs naturally in Western Asia and Northwest Africa. It has become naturalised in many other parts of the world. It belongs to the large family of composite plants (Asteraceae). The chicory lives up to its name, because when it flowers in midsummer it is a conspicuous companion along roadsides and is often found here.
The chicory is botanically related to the chicory salad. In addition, a coffee substitute (chicory coffee) is made from the roots.
