The coot dives a lot, especially when searching for water plants. It doesn't like to fly, but prefers to run over the water. When taking off from the water, they first run a bit too. However, during migration, which usually takes place at night, they can cover great distances.
The coot is an omnivore, which mainly feeds on water plants, molluscs and water insects. They also eat seeds, grass and berries. The coot is monogamous.
