The street used to look a bit different. Frans Faasen of the shop Petit Commerce d'Antiques explains: "Every street in Dordt used to have its own function. In the Knolhaven tubers were processed, on the Vismarkt they sold fish and so on. In the Vleeshouwersstraat there were butchers. Animals were slaughtered and salted in this street for sale. There was also a special sewer for the blood and the intestines. That was transported to the Nieuwe Haven and Knolhaven."
It is said that animal skins were often used as foundations for buildings. The story even goes that the church was founded on cow skins, but there are doubts about that. Who knows, maybe this is a good idea for the next mystery.
