About ‘Étretat in storm light’ by Marald Bes

The chalk cliffs of Étretat, on a day when the weather had taken all the colour out of the landscape.

On the right the Porte d'Aval, the natural arch the water runs through, with the free-standing needle of the Aiguille behind it.

Both are grey rather than white. There is no sun to make the chalk light up, and at the top the rock passes almost seamlessly into the cloud.

On the left the cliff runs inland in ever paler grey until it disappears into the haze.

In the foreground the shingle beach, coarse and dark, with a single line of surf running in at an angle.

The sea beyond is nearly empty, a large plane of grey-green dissolving towards the horizon. There is barely any contrast, and that is exactly why the arch gets all the attention.

On top of the cliff stand two people in silhouette. Easy to miss, but it gives away how high that wall is.

Cold, quiet, northern.

On a wall this is a calm picture for a light, minimal room, where it can hang as a grey tone between white and concrete. For anyone who knows the Normandy coast.
