A fishing net is a knitted or knotted net with openings (meshes) of equal width which is placed in the water or dragged through the water in order to catch fish.
The edges of a fishing net are reinforced with a rope called a sim. A gaal is a piece of net used as a component in a composite fishing net.
The size of the meshes and the thickness of the twine used can vary greatly. This depends on the size of the fish to be caught and the type of fishing gear.
The repair of damage to existing nets is called fining.
The total of the fishing nets and associated rigging is also called a fish net.
