Scarce birds mainly eat insects such as beetles and grasshoppers and other invertebrates such as snails and worms but also small vertebrates such as frogs, mice and lizards.
Scarce birds can often be found sitting on a lookout such as a telephone pole, a wire or branch. From this position, they may pounce on prey crawling across the ground, then return to their post to feast on it.
