This photograph shows the majestic colonnaded avenue of Palmyra in Syria - a masterpiece of ancient architecture that once marked the main entrance to the former trading metropolis. In the centre stands the iconic archway, which was one of the most important monuments in the Middle East, not only structurally but also symbolically. The picture shows it in its full splendour - before its systematic destruction by the so-called Islamic State in 2015.
The golden light of the desert sun, the clearly structured columns, the rhythmic alternation of shadow and structure - everything radiates dignity and grandeur. And then: the silhouettes of visitors, including children, moving carefree between the witnesses of history. A moment between eternity and everyday life, between monumental history and human life.
This picture is more than a work of art. It is a contemporary document. A silent cry against oblivion. A visual memorial that puts beauty, culture and humanity centre stage - precisely because they are so fragile.
