The Gullfoss waterfall in Iceland, part of the golden circle; Gulfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir. Because we were very early at this waterfall it was fortunately not so busy yet. The air towards the interior was very threatening, and the sun shone in our backs, making the clouds beautifully exposed.
The water falls into two steps, which are more or less perpendicular to each other, 32 meters down in a gap which is also fully on the second stage. The stairs are formed by hard layers of basalt that alternate with softer materials. These separate layers are also well recognized in the walls of the gap. The gap is more than 70 meters deep, 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers long.
