About "Half-timbered houses in Wernigerode, including the "Smallest House""

About the artwork

The so-called "smallest house" is located at Kochstraße 43 in Wernigerode and is known for its small size. A social-historical cultural monument, it is one of the best-known buildings in the city. It is owned by the city of Wernigerode and today the smallest house is used as a small folklore museum.

The Smallest House in Wernigerode was built in 1792 near the former town wall in a former craftsmen's quarter. The poorer the builders were, the closer they built to the town wall. By squeezing the building into a 2.95 m wide gap between the neighbouring houses, they saved the two gable walls. On the ground floor of the "smallest house" is the hall and the kitchen, on the ground floor a 9 sqm living room and in the attic the bedroom. The toilets are located in the backyard of the house. In the 4.2m high front facade there is a front door only 1.7m high. The ceiling height is a maximum of about 1.90m. The house was inhabited by up to eleven people at a time. Mostly the inhabitants were craftsmen, such as pipe drillers, clothiers and shoemakers. It was last inhabited until 1976.
