A lightning discharge between Utrecht and Nieuwegein. The lightning discharges above the cloud with some offshoots out of sight, and then runs down to an impact point, somewhere between Utrecht and Nieuwegein. I took this photo from my balcony in Utrecht. From this perspective, the strike is 'behind' the tower of the Prins Claus Bridge (the bridge over the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal) and therefore I estimate that the strike was more near Nieuwegein.
I am always fascinated by the power of such a discharge, and how much energy is released all at once. Trees split because of the heat, and a personal impact is often fatal.
