Exposed juniper tree roots show their tenacity in the harsh environments of the high deserts of the southwestern USA. In the background, the colorful hoodoo rock formations of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah are a stark contrast to the blues and greys of the sky as a monsoon season storm rolls into the area. The foreground reveals how the roots cling to the earth and at the same time help erosion break up the rocks and soil.
The Colorado Plateau and Grand Staircase region has always fascinated me, and though I was born 2000 miles away in the eastern United States, this area is where my heart and soul call home. For me, the landscapes of the southwest are an echo of the trials I have faced, and overcome, in my own life. I return year after year to cleanse my spirit and ground myself.
