The lively fashionable resort of Riva del Garda is surrounded by mighty mountains on the narrow northern tip of Lake Garda.
With a population of around 13,000, it is the second largest town on the lake after Desenzano. It has only belonged to Italy since 1919 and before that was under Austrian rule for a long time. This can still be felt and leads to a pleasant mixture of Italian ease and Tyrolean down-to-earthness.
Piazza III Novembre, framed by 13th-century Venetian-Lombard buildings and archways and the picturesque harbor, is one of the largest local centers on Lake Garda. It is dominated by the Torre Apponale, visible from afar, which once served as a watch and control tower. The town hall (Palazzo Municipale) is also located here, as well as the associated Palazzo Pretorio, where justice was once administered. While the arcades once housed stores and warehouses, today they are primarily home to cafes and restaurants.
