About ‘Lighthouse reflected in the water’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A solitary lighthouse stands on a rugged, rocky coastline, surrounded by a landscape in which there is hardly anything to distract the eye. A heavy blanket of cloud hangs above the tower, whilst the still water in the foreground provides a striking contrast. There, the lighthouse appears a second time: as a dark reflection amongst the rocks.

It was precisely that reflection that caught my eye. The straight, man-made lines of the lighthouse stand out against the jagged rock face, yet are almost perfectly mirrored in the water. It lends the image a natural balance and, at the same time, a sense of tranquillity and mystery.

For me, the dark black-and-white processing reinforces the sense of isolation. It is a landscape that appears rugged and inhospitable, with the lighthouse as a small but steadfast beacon. An image of stillness, direction and a sense of stability amidst overwhelming nature.

Thanks to the powerful contrasts, the square format and the understated aesthetic, this work can occupy a distinctive place in an interior. From a distance, the lighthouse is particularly striking; those who look a little longer will discover the reflection, the textures in the rocks and the many nuances in the menacing sky.
