Magdeburg's lift bridge over the Elbe is a favourite photo. It is located a few hundred metres south of the cathedral rock, near Magdeburg Cathedral and the monastery of Our Lady.
The bridge was built in 1848, at that time still with nine openings, for the newly created Potsdam-Magdeburg railway line. It was rebuilt several times and has existed in its current form since 1933.
After its use as a railway bridge ended in 1998, the lift bridge was locked in its raised state in June 2001. Today it is used as a pedestrian bridge.
