The technical monument is one of the defining structures of Magdeburg's skyline. In operation from 1848 to 1998, it now serves as a pedestrian bridge.
Magdeburg's lift bridge is one of the city's most popular photo motifs. A few hundred meters south of the cathedral rock, it frames monumental buildings such as the cathedral and the Unser Lieben Frauen convent with industrial-cultural charm.
The bridge was built in 1848, at that time still with nine openings, for the newly created Potsdam-Magdeburg railroad line. To meet the changing requirements of Elbe shipping, the lift bridge was rebuilt several times and has stood in its present form since 1933.
After its use as a railroad bridge ended in 1998, the lift bridge was locked in the raised state in June 2001. Then it was already used as a pedestrian bridge between 2002 and 2005, until it was completely closed after the rebuilding of the Sternbrücke. In 2013, the bridge was repaired through a large-scale fundraising campaign and has been accessible again since then.
