Mesa Arch in Utah, captured just after sunrise during my road trip across the United States in 2017.
For this shot, I was up early. Still in the dark, I drove towards Canyonlands National Park, with one goal: to photograph Mesa Arch in first light. It is a popular spot, and rightly so; the combination of landscape, light and shape is unique. As it can get crowded quickly, I got there in time to get the best spot.
As the sun rose, light slipped under the arch and colored the rock intensely orange. The valley behind the arch slowly became visible, bathed in soft morning light. Everything fell into place: the rhythm of the light, the texture of the rock, and the silence in which even the crowds around me fell away.
I took this shot with my favorite lens: the Voigtländer 12mm wide-angle. That choice was deliberate; the lens lets me work close to the subject and still capture the entire scene, without distortion. The arch frames the image, and the depth of the landscape comes out beautifully.
At home, I fleshed out the image with attention to contrast and colour, but without compromising the natural atmosphere. The result is a landscape photograph that means a lot to me personally. Mesa Arch is without doubt one of the most impressive places I have ever had the pleasure of photographing.
