Zermatt in the southern Swiss canton of Valais is a mountain resort popular with skiers, climbers and hikers. The town lies at an altitude of 1,600 metres at the foot of the famous, pyramid-shaped Matterhorn.
At an altitude of 4,478 metres, the majestic Matterhorn - arguably the most famous mountain in Europe - stretches out in a breathtaking Alpine panorama. Switzerland's freestanding landmark lies on the border of the western Swiss canton of Valais - between Zermatt and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia. Striking and unmistakable, perfectly shaped like an Egyptian pyramid, it stands there, at the end of the Mattertal valley, in the middle of the Valais Alps. With the first ascent in 1865, the "Matterhorn myth" was born and quickly went around the world. The Matterhorn - the mountain of mountains. The most photographed mountain in the world. Myth and emblem for alpinists and photographers. The landmark and symbol of Switzerland.
