Moving Past: a blue abstract artwork full of energy by Tim Hupkes

Moving Past is about movement. Not the easy, fluid kind where everything happens naturally, but the sort where you have to move through, past or beyond something.

Various shades of blue dominate the painting, ranging from bright turquoise to deep dark blue, interspersed with bold black lines and an almost luminous green streak. The brushstrokes remain visible and lend the work direction and speed. Some shapes seem to hold each other back, whilst others break right through the image.

As is often the case in my abstract work, *Moving Past* emerged intuitively. I work with colour, movement and composition, and react whilst painting to what is happening on the canvas. As a result, the meaning does not arise in advance, but during the process.

For me, this work conveys the sense of moving past something. Not erasing what lies behind you, nor pretending that resistance does not exist, but moving on nonetheless.

Thanks to the strong shades of blue, Moving Past has a quality that is both powerful and calm. It can be a striking focal point in a tranquil interior, without becoming garish.

The original work is hand-painted, with visible brushstrokes and layered paint.
