Before the balloon launch in Rhenen, as the sun begins to set and the sky takes on a deep blue, there is a special atmosphere. The coloured balloons stand ready, their shapes slowly bulging by the sound of the burners. Preparations are in full swing, boarding the basket is exciting. Slowly, the balloon is pulled up and the air is filled with warmth from the flames rising into the sky.
Still very exciting: I feel if the basket is solid. Sweat breaks out in me. The ropes are untied and the burner summons a hungry flame that shoots into the air. Slowly you feel the balloon begin to rise, the ground beneath your feet fading away. The tension of ascension gives way to a moment of wonder as you slowly watch the city disappear beneath you and the horizon recede further and further away. It is a magical moment.
I dive, bend, crawl and jump to capture the perfect moment.
