Petten belonged to the Heerlijkheid Petten and Nolmerban and then became a municipality. In 1929, the municipality of Petten merged into the municipality of Zijpe. During World War II, the entire village of Petten was demolished in 1943 by order of the German Wehrmacht due to the construction of the Atlantic Wall. Petten's church was demolished in 1944. After the war, a whole new village was built from 1946 onwards, designed by architects Van de Ban and De Vassy. In 1955, the Reactor Centrum Nederland (RCN) foundation was established, which then built a research reactor (Kernreactoren Petten) at Petten. Since 1976, the foundation has been called Energieonderzoek Centrum Nederland (ECN).
