The eagle owl is a real opportunist when it comes to food and breeding behavior. Its food preference for the slower birds in the Netherlands is striking. People in the field and people living near eagle owl nests speak of an animal that 'catches everything that can be caught in the vicinity'. In the Netherlands this includes black crows, magpies, rooks, jackdaws, jays, wood pigeons, rock pigeons, all (slower) birds of prey, all owl species, mice and rats, hares and rabbits, hedgehogs, young pheasants, martens and young foxes. It can be said that the only enemy of the eagle owl is man. Wood pigeons, mice, rats, hedgehogs and crow flies form the main staple diet of the eagle owl in the Netherlands.
In the vast nature reserves of Europe, the eagle owl feeds on mice, hedgehogs, fish(!), hares, partridges, pigeons, ducks, lizards, hamsters, frogs, crabs, earthworms and beetles.
I love to go out into nature and do landscapes and macro photography.
