Millions of years ago, the Lilienstein was an island in the middle of the Urelbe. Hard rock forms the core of the mountain. Washed around by the flowing waters, the loose rocks and sediments were eroded away. The mesa as such withstood all weather conditions and today forms a particularly striking mountain shape. Table mountains are a special feature of Saxon Switzerland.
