Sakura is the Japanese word for 'cherry trees'. In Dutch, we use the term 'cherry blossom'.
Everywhere in Japan you come across the cherry blossom. It's not just the trees themselves, but also in various products.
In Japan, you actually see images of trees everywhere; in paintings, on kimonos and they are often incorporated in the arms of important families, like chrysanthemums in the emblem of the imperial family. Over the centuries, the cherry blossom (also called 'ornamental cherry' or 'prunus') played an important role.
Sakura has a short flowering period of about two weeks.
The sakura can unofficially be considered the national flower in Japan. Every year, when the sakura blossoms start blooming, the Hanami festival is celebrated with picnics among the trees. In Japan, the sakura is a symbol of transient beauty. It is closely associated with the samurai and with bushidō ("the way of the warrior"). Life is considered beautiful and short, a bit like the cherry blossom.
