Colourful scene of a girl sitting in a chair, looking at the viewer with an oblique gaze. The background is a pattern of red, yellow and blue dots. It is a cheerful image.
What is going through her mind as she looks at you? Could she have a great idea or just be entertained by your presence? She smiles lightly.
The image is energetic and sparkling because of the movement of the dot pattern, but also has something cubist about it because of the angularity of her pose. Her facial features are somewhat magnified, so that her eyes stand out. The texture of the blouse and skirt gives the image 3D quality.
The angles of her jaw and limbs highlight the technique I used. Namely, it is a collage of pieces of paper built up in layers. The parts of her body closest to the viewer form the top layer. Because I used different types of paper, you can see their texture reflected in the work.
Furthermore, I like to draw patterns that I later use as backgrounds or clothes for my characters. For instance, the polka dots pattern already existed and I later added it to the image of the girl. Consequently, I have drawers full of coloured paper that I bought, found or recycled.
This work gives the necessary pop of colour to a neutral interior, but, because of the white background, is also calm enough if you already have some coloured furniture.
My work distinguishes itself by strong colours and clear shapes. I work with ecoline, ink and pencil, but I also like to cut and paste.
I get my inspiration from nature and like to daydream. Animals and people sometimes seem to melt together in these reveries.
