About ‘Pollarded tree, Lake Zug’ by Marald Bes

A pollarded tree on a small square of grass between the road and the water, on the shore of Lake Zug in Switzerland, on a November morning.

It has been cut back to the knuckles, so the branches end in thick knobs with a burst of thin shoots coming out of each one. You never see that silhouette in nature: symmetrical, broad and entirely made by human hands.

It stands dead centre. Beneath it the grass sits in a neat rectangle, with the edge of the asphalt at the front and a drain cover just making it into the frame.

Behind it the water, smooth and without a ripple, taking over the sky. And that is where the colour is: soft lilac at the top, going to pink and pale yellow towards the horizon.

On the far side a wall of fog, white and dense, removes the opposite bank completely. It makes the water look endless.

One for the sort who is out first, while the day still belongs to nobody.
