Pumping station Cruquius from 1849 is one of the three pumping stations used to pump dry the Haarlemmermeer between 1849 and 1852. It is the largest steam engine in the world and was decommissioned in 1933. It belongs to the top 100 Dutch national monuments. It is named after the Dutch hydraulic engineer Nicolaus Samuelis Cruquius, born as Nicolaas Kruik in 1678 in West-Vlieland. The imposing combination of technology and architecture make Cruquius an industrial monument of world class. The pumping station in turn gave the name Cruquius to the village nearby.
