Royal Air Force Chinook in action during airshow.
The Boeing VERTOL CH-47 Chinook is a 2-engine multi-purpose medium-weight tandem-rotor transport helicopter developed primarily for troop and equipment transport to and from the battlefield.
The history of the Chinook began in 1956 when the US Army wanted to replace the H-37 helicopters. As a result of the design competition between several manufacturers, the preferred model in 1957 was Boeing VERTOL, which was allowed to continue the development and produced the first HC-1B Chinook in 1958.
In 1962, the Chinook was deployed operationally for the first time during the Vietnam War. When the registration of all military aircraft was changed in 1962, the type designation was renamed the CH-47A.
