Fog, drizzle rain and cold, perfect conditions for a Scottish highlander. The animals are made for this weather and I wanted to capture that. The cool dark colours combined with the warm red of the calf's fur. The very soft backlight. This is exactly the mood I was looking for.
Scottish Highlander calves are the young of an ancient breed of cattle from the Scottish Highlands. They are born with thick, woolly coats of various colours and later develop horns. The mother cow protects and feeds the calf intensively for the first six to eight months, after which the calf also starts eating grass. These calves grow slowly and are adapted to cold and wet climates, surviving on sparse vegetation. They live in small herds, learn to survive within these social groups, and have a long lifespan of up to 20 years. Because of their robustness and adaptation to their natural environment, they have few health problems.
