A sparrow sits on a branch pecking at one of the two fat balls I had hung for the birds in the garden. They get a lot of use. Fat balls in winter are nutritious, provide energy and protection. They are a good temporary replacement for caterpillars that are not around to eat in winter. Just make sure the plastic nets are safe. Birds can get stuck in them. However, fat balls are very often sold in such nets. So cut them off and offer them in another way, or offer the fat balls like this and always keep an eye on whether everything is going safely.
