The spoonbill is about 80 to 93 cm long. The spoonbill is immediately recognizable by its spatula-shaped black bill, which is yellow on the front. The bird is white with yellow/light orange spots. The elongated head feathers form a bushy crest.
Spoonbills leave their wintering grounds in early February. The return trip is interrupted much more often than the outward trip. In order to have enough energy for the trip, they also have to stop along the coasts of Morocco and France. Once they arrive in the Netherlands, Friesland and Groningen are the staging areas. From there, the birds fly on to their breeding colonies. Nowadays, several dozen spoonbills spend the winter in Zeeland and Holland.
