Sunrise in the Hatertsevennen near Nijmegen. There is a thin layer of ice on the water and the first morning light can be seen on the horizon. The air slowly colors. The Overasseltse and Hatertse Vennen are just south-east of Nijmegen. The area consists of fens and river dunes and is geologically very young (110,000 to 10,000 years ago). The high dry drift sand ridges were extremely suitable for habitation. There are many finds here from different periods of around 8000 BC. until 1500 AD. Up until 1900 the fens area had its own specific water management, independent of the regional groundwater. This changed around 1900. Both municipalities and individuals dug ditches and ditches to drain the water.
