About ‘Swirled sandstone, Nuweiba’ by Marald Bes

A wall in the Coloured Canyon near Nuweiba in Sinai, taken from so close in that there is no horizon and no sense of scale left.

What remains is pattern. The layers of sandstone run in bands across the frame and turn halfway into a tight curl, as though the stone had once been liquid.

In a sense it was: these are deposits worn down by wind and water until they came out smooth.

The colours run from deep rust red at the top through orange to almost yellow at the bottom, with thin dark veins separating the layers. In a few places hairline cracks cut across the pattern, and bottom right there is a straight break where a piece has come away.

Those interruptions give away that it is stone. At first glance you think of a sawn tree trunk.

No sky, no people, nothing growing. The frame is completely full.

This works on colour rather than subject. If that is your thing, it hangs anywhere.
