I can't quite decide what my favourite summer flower is, but the poppy is high on the list. Unusual because it does not bloom in summer but in the months of May and June.
If I am lucky I suddenly see a whole field of poppies somewhere, preferably really red like the one you see here. It was in a flower field in Selci, Sabina in Italy.
Between the poppies grow spikes of a grass species. They are about the same length and approach each other's beauty. Together they form a subtle, summery spectacle in the early morning sun.
The light gives the grass ear gloss and colour, highlighting all the seeds one by one. The poppy seems to show its inside and outside at the same time, letting the light of the sun shine through its petals, revealing the heart of the flower as a dark shadow in the middle.
Together, they are a promise of a beautiful, warm spring day on the hill where they grew.
