About ‘The Giralda through the arch’ by Marald Bes

A street in Seville, seen from a dark passageway.

The arch you are looking through is old and plastered, with flaking paint and a cable running untidily along it.

Inside it the street lies in the sun: yellow and white facades with wrought iron balconies, a row of trees with clipped crowns, and at the end the Giralda, the cathedral bell tower, its brick patterning visible down to the detail.

On the floor of the passage lies a herringbone of old bricks, worn down and sunk out of true. The moment you step outside it turns into large flat tiles.

Above the tower the clouds gather, grey-blue and heavy. That makes the yellow light on the facades stand out all the more.

There is nobody in the street.

Cool in the shade, warm in the light. The temperature of an Andalusian afternoon when everyone is indoors.

On a wall this works as a window: those dark edges pull you in. It suits the end of a corridor or a small room where you want depth. For anyone who loves old cities.
