About ‘The Kingfisher Dance’ by RenskeMakes

The Kingfisher Dance – hand-painted in acrylic gouache (2025)

This painting arose from the idea of capturing not just one kingfisher, but two birds in action. Above all, I wanted to capture the moment of movement: wings spread wide, a bird emerging from the water and droplets splashing all around them.

For this piece, I once again worked with acrylic gouache. This really brought out the bright shades of blue and the orange of the kingfishers. I added the purple tones to the wings to create some extra colour contrast.

The background has been deliberately painted in a looser style than the birds themselves. The reeds, the trees and the water together form a natural setting, without everything being rendered in minute detail.
