The roller grows to be about 30 centimeters long and weighs 127 to 154 grams and has a predominantly blue plumage. It has a large head and a powerful, thick, black bill. The plumage is bright light blue with deep blue small wing feathers, rump and parts of the underwing. The back is brown, the wing tips and top of the tail are black. Juvenile birds are fainter and have a lighter brown back.
In the nest, 4-5 eggs are laid, in the month of June or July. Both parents brood, the clutch hatches after 17-19 days. After this both parents take care of the young, which fledge after 25-30 days. Even after this, they continue to feed the young for a while.
