The beautiful Sneeker Waterpoort is over 500 years old and was once built to close off the waterway to the city. Today, it is the only remaining watergate and the symbol of the city of Sneek and all of Friesland. And it is truly beautiful, from the sloop I was on I had a great view of the watergate and its reflection.
Sneek's Waterpoort, built in 1613, is an iconic structure in Sneek, Friesland. One of the few remaining in the Netherlands, this watergate combines Dutch Renaissance architecture with defensive functions, characterised by two towers and an ornate arch. Originally built as part of the city's defences, the Waterpoort has been renovated over the years and now serves as an important symbol of Sneek. It plays a central role in local events such as Sneekweek and is a favourite subject for photographers and artists.
I converted this version to black and white to reduce the distraction caused by colours and focus more on the essence of the image. Using black and white also helps create a stronger and more beautiful contrast, enhancing the shapes, lines and textures in the picture. This approach emphasises the details and creates a timeless and classic look.
