Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.
The artwork appears at its true size, so you cannot scale it in AR. Want a different size? Close AR and pick the size on the product page.
Still nothing? Open this page in Chrome or Safari. AR does not work in the browser of apps such as Instagram or Facebook.

About ‘The entrance to the Academy Building’ by Jan van der Knaap

The entrance to the Academy Building on Domplein in Utrecht. The Academy Building dates from 1891 and was built in the Neo-Renaissance style. During the building’s design, there was a fierce debate between the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance schools of thought. Ultimately, the Neo-Renaissance style was chosen because, unlike the Neo-Gothic style, it was seen as more representative of humanism. Consequently, the Union of Utrecht (1579) was not signed in this building. That took place in the adjacent chapter house, which is now connected to the new Academy Building and serves as an auditorium.
In front of the entrance stands Sol, bearing the motto Sol Iustitiae Illustra Nos (Sun of Justice, enlighten us). This motto and the sun are the symbols of Utrecht University. The artwork Sol is not old at all, but dates from 1994. This photograph is part of the Modern History series and is therefore in black and white.

Jan van der Knaap

Purmerend, Netherlands

Hi there! Nice seeing you here! I'm Jan vd Knaap, a photographer in Utrecht. I normally deal with portrait photography, for humans and animals, and I give workshops to get the most out of the camera. But in the meantime, I fill my account here with photos that I like. That can actually be anything, ranging from seasonal photos to macro photography, or abstract to landscapes and locations. The Netherlands is a beautiful country and beautiful photos can be found…
