About ‘Two trees in the mist’ by Marald Bes

Two bare trees in thick November fog near De Zilk, in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen.

No colour: this is black and white. The sky is white, the fog is white, and only the branches and the tuft of grass at the bottom are dark.

The left tree stands full in the frame, with a broad symmetrical crown and a dense net of thin twigs. The right one is smaller and further off, so paler, and its branches dissolve into the fog halfway out.

Between the two there is nothing. That empty stretch is what the picture turns on.

Behind them a row of taller trees shows through, more a shade of grey than a shape, and on the far right everything disappears into white.

Along the bottom a narrow strip of rough grass with frost on it. The only place with any texture.

No horizon. Nothing else.

If you love fog, this is one to look at for a long time.
