About the artwork
Old stone gable stairs along facade of a building in the Azores. Made with locally found and cut lava rock, bricked, plastered and whitewashed. The most common construction method of houses and buildings in the Azores archipelago, the islands of Portugal. Basic and simple are the ordinary houses and peasant structures, no frills, functional and simple, usually made by local artisans. It has an air of simplicity, exudes tranquillity, and it is the common way, it is the standard of the Azores.
Capturing the staircase in the image to just the representation of the ascent gives the picture more power, it is almost graphic, but retaining its natural tone. In
natural colours the plate can also be found at Werk aan de Muur so that version is also possible for enthusiasts, it is then even closer to reality, white limed with shadows of the unevenness on a soft green grass with some yellow flowers....
