Venice without a gondola is like soup without salt. A gondola ride through the canals of Venice is the highlight of a romantic holiday in Venice. The gondoliers are proud of their profession and their gondolas. Each one is unique and no two are the same. The image of the canals is characterised by the gondoliers, who juggle their gondolas with great skill through the narrow canals and flat bridges.
Probably the most famous waterway in the metropolis is the Grand Canal, which winds its way through the area in an S-shape. Hundreds of boats take people from one side to the other every day or serve as excursion boats for many tourists.
The Grand Canal flows past magnificent buildings and palaces from the Italian Renaissance and offers visitors a wonderful view of the city's architectural gems.
The canal itself is only five metres deep and an average of fifty metres wide. More than 45 canals flow into the Grand Canal, making it the hub of Venetian shipping.
