View of Passau's Old Town from the hiking trail to Veste Oberhaus, which has several viewpoints. A steep climb up the mountain, but worth it with the view of the city and the confluence of the three rivers. The city has many white buildings, giving it a fairytale feel. And it is a fairy tale. The old medieval walls, the cosiness, the tranquillity. This is truly one of the most beautiful cities in southern Germany, perhaps in all of Germany.
Passau was an unplanned stop on the way back home. Just across the border with Austria lies this crown jewel in Bavaria. Three rivers converge here. The Inn, Danube and Ilz, and you can see the different colours of water flowing side by side as you look at the rivers from Veste Oberhaus. The river you see here is the Danube.
Passau is a historic city dating back to the Celts and the Romans. Full of historic buildings, many old houses and buildings have been preserved. You really imagine yourself in the Middle Ages at times. The old houses reflect in the water of the river. The hills in the landscape make it even more romantic.
The city has two castles and a cathedral; it is also a lively city with lots of jazz and students. We were only there briefly, but I can really recommend this green, historic city between the rivers to anyone. Full of surprises, like the road to the altstadt via the old railway.
