The Wantij is a waterway in the province of South Holland, roughly from the Biesbosch near the Merwede to Dordrecht. This water divides the Eiland van Dordrecht in two. The Wantij owes its name to the large tidal differences that could still occur here - despite its inland location. The Maas and the Waal have traditionally met near Dordrecht, and these major rivers dramatically influence the level in the narrow Wantij. Moreover, until the closure of the Haringvliet, the Biesbosch was in the direct influence of the North Sea tides. Tidal influence is still noticeable, in the first part of the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch the difference is about 70 cm and the current velocity rises to about 4 km/h.
