About ‘Wild flowers (digitally edited photo)’ by Rini Kools

These flowers, which we found growing by the side of a gravel road in Tasmania, belong to the genus Digitalis, known in Europe as foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), also commonly referred to simply as foxglove. It is a poisonous biennial or perennial plant that is common in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is also used in ornamental gardens and self-seeds readily. Foxglove grows to a height of 30–200 cm. The plant has a rosette of ovate to lanceolate leaves, which are grey-hairy on the underside. In the first year, only leaves form.
In the second year, a flower stalk emerges, on which a cluster develops of flowers facing in the same direction, which can grow to 4–5 cm in length. The stem and flowers are covered with short, soft hairs. All the flowers on a plant are the same colour: deep pink (magenta), pale pink or white; the white-flowering plants are sometimes regarded as a separate species. The corollas feature dark spots surrounded by a white margin.
We also came across this beautiful plant here and there in Tasmania. Outside Europe, the plant has often become naturalised under suitable conditions. Suitable habitats include cleared areas in the forest and other disturbed, light-colored soils that are shaded for part of the day. These are likely to be naturalised garden plants which, as noted earlier, spread easily.
