Laphroaig is a Scottish Islay single malt whisky. The Laphroaig distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Alex and Donald Johnston. The Johnston brothers were in fact McDonalds, who changed their name after the failed Jacobite rebellion, and settled on the Isle of Islay.
Laphroaig is a whisky with a strong, distinct flavour. It is usually sold as 10 years old, but the 18 years old is also popular. The 15 years old has been off the market for some time, but is very popular among Laphroaig connoisseurs. There are also 30- and 40-year-old variants, but these are rarely encountered. A drop of water in the whisky puts a good emphasis on the peaty aroma, according to some drinkers.
Laphroaig is experimenting to bring back the flavour of historic whiskies. A smaller cask (the Laphroaig Quarter Cask) has recently been commissioned, with which it hopes to recover the taste of whisky as it was 100 years ago.
In 1994, Laphroaigh received Royal Assent from HRH Prince Charles, which was personally presented by the prince.
