Wings in the Silence

by Rudy Haringhuizen

A large bird of prey soars through an empty, grey sky. Its broad wings are fully outstretched and the individual flight feathers stand out sharply. There is no landscape, no horizon and nothing to distract the eye. Just the dark shape of the bird against an almost uniform sky.

What appeals to me in this photograph is precisely that simplicity. By capturing the bird as a dark silhouette, many details disappear, leaving primarily its powerful form. The curved beak, the broad wings and the long feathers say enough. The vast amount of empty space around it reinforces the sense of freedom and makes its flight seem almost weightless.

The understated black-and-white processing gives the image a graphic quality. The contrast between the dark bird and the soft grey tones of the sky creates tension, without the image feeling cluttered. At the same time, there is movement in the position of the wings: this is not a static portrait, but a single fraction of a moment in continuous flight.

For me, the image symbolises freedom and strength, but also tranquillity. High in the sky, the bird seems, for a moment, detached from everything happening below.

Hanging on the wall, this photograph really comes into its own, particularly because of its simplicity. The large, calm areas make it suitable for a modern or minimalist interior, whilst the powerful silhouette immediately catches the eye. An image for lovers of birds, nature and photography, in which a great deal is conveyed with just a few elements.
