't Goude Hooft was an inn for people from outside the city, a tavern for visitors to the markets and a meeting place where knights met. In 1660, the tavern was rebuilt by Pieter Post and fitted with the two golden heads on the facade. In 1886, 't Goude Hooft was rebuilt again. In the 19th century, the owner established a gentlemen's club on the first floor. This was disbanded when there were too few members.
In the past, there was an underground passage to the prison gate. When that prison was full, prisoners were locked up under 't Goude Hooft.[1]
Although, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the Waag (Doesburg) is said to be the oldest functioning catering establishment in the Netherlands, the 1423 mention of 't Goude Hooft is still earlier than the construction of the Doesburg Waag in 1478.
