About "262. The United States of Dollar"

by Domstad Rudie

About the artwork

This digital artwork is a satirical reinterpretation of the US flag. At first glance, the image retains the classic elements of the US national flag: the horizontal red and white stripes and the blue field in the upper left corner. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that the traditional star field has been replaced by a pattern of dollar signs. This modification forms the central and most striking visual statement of the artwork.

The white dollar signs on the blue field replace the 50 stars that normally symbolise the 50 states of the US. In doing so, the artist suggests a critical view of the role of money in US society and politics. The dollar signs symbolise capitalism, economic power and perhaps greed, questioning or reinterpreting the original ideals of freedom, unity and democracy as subordinate to financial interests.

The choice of colours remains true to the original: red for courage, white for purity and blue for justice. However, in this context, the colours take on a cynical undertone, as if the original values have been overshadowed by economic motives.

This artwork invites the viewer to reflect on the influence of capital on national identity, values and power. It is a powerful example of how visual art can provide political commentary, and how familiar symbols can be transformed to expose social issues.
