A solitary lighthouse rises from the rugged coastal landscape. A heavy, dark blanket of clouds hangs over the rocks, whilst the black-and-white tower with its bright red roof stands almost imperturbably beneath it. In a small pool of water in the foreground, the lighthouse reappears as a reflection — a detail that, for me, completes the composition.
The landscape appears inhospitable and is dominated by rock, water and sky. It is precisely this that lends the lighthouse a sense of steadfastness. It stands there as a beacon in an environment constantly shaped by wind and weather. The small red roof, as the only bright colour, immediately catches the eye and forms a powerful contrast with the muted, earthy tones all around.
The dark processing enhances the atmosphere I wish to convey in this image: silence, seclusion and a touch of melancholy. At the same time, for me, a lighthouse also symbolises direction and a sense of stability. No matter how threatening the sky becomes, the beacon remains standing.
The reflection adds extra depth to the image. Your gaze moves from the dark foreground, via the reflection, to the real lighthouse and finally to the heavy, cloudy sky. As a result, despite the dramatic atmosphere, there is a great sense of calm in the composition.
Hanging on the wall, this is a powerful and atmospheric piece. The subdued colours blend beautifully into a tranquil interior, whilst the red roof adds a subtle yet striking accent. A piece for lovers of rugged coastal landscapes, Scandinavia, lighthouses and the unique atmosphere of approaching bad weather.
