About ‘A stormy night over the Adriatic’ by Marcel Hechler

It was late summer, and I was on holiday on the Adriatic coast near Monfalcone. Something had been brewing on the horizon all evening — I knew that storm was coming. So I set up my tripod and waited.

What you see was captured in a single long exposure: several flashes of lightning strike simultaneously over the sea, whilst the water below remains almost completely still. It was precisely this contrast that captivated me — the force in the sky, the stillness on the sea. At the bottom left, a dark rock anchors the image; on the horizon, the small lights of boats and the harbour glimmer.

The black-and-white treatment brings the drama into sharp relief: no colourful effects, just light, darkness and form. For me, the image speaks of respect for nature — of a moment that is both powerful and strangely peaceful.

On the wall, it exudes a calm strength and suits rooms with a clean, modern or minimalist style.
